FOMA Legal Counsel and Past President, Morton Morris, DO, JD Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we report the news of the passing of one of the osteopathic medical profession’s most respected members, Morton Morris, DO, JD, on May 2, 2008 at the age of 77. He graduated from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1956. He was board certified in orthopedic surgery, was a fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics and the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons. Dr. Morris served as President of the FOMA from 1978-1979 and was the Legal Counsel for the FOMA. Dr. Morris also served as Executive Director of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics, served on many AOA committees, most recently serving as the Chairman of the AOA Council on Continuing Medical Education. In his hometown of Davie, Florida, Dr. Morris was the Executive Dean for Professional Affairs at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSUCOM). In addition to chairing NSU-COMs continuing medical education program, Dr. Morris taught medical jurisprudence and orthopedic surgery at NSU-COM.

On May 5, 2008, hundreds of Dr. Morris’s colleagues, friends, and family members, gathered in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, at NSUCOM’s Morris Auditorium, donated by and named in his honor, to pay our respects to this great osteopathic physician and leader. He was truly a dedicated leader, mentor and friend to us all and will be sorely missed.

A scholarship fund has been set up in his name. In memory of Morton Morris, DO, JD, donations may be made to the "Dr. Morton Morris Scholarship". This scholarship will benefit generations of students and health professionals for many years to come.
