Asfa Akhtar, DO, FAOCD, FAAD, graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Medicine (NSU-COM) with Honors and completed her Dermatology residency at Broward General Medical Center. Dr. Akhtar is board certified in Dermatology. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and The American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. She is the first Osteopathic female physician to be President of the Broward County Dermatology Society. Currently, Dr. Akhtar is a staff dermatologist in the Department of Dermatology with Cleveland Clinic in Florida. She is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Dermatology with NSU in Davie, Florida and holds faculty appointments at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine in Ohio as well as Florida Atlantic University. She speaks English, Hindi, and Urdu and trains Dermatology, Plastic surgery and Internal Medicine residents.
Renee B. Alexis, MD, MBA, MPH, FACOG, is an obstetrician-gynecologist in Davie, Florida, and is affiliated with Broward Health Medical Center. She received her medical degree from University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed her OBGYN residency at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami Florida. Dr. Alexis has been in practice for more than 20+ years. She is one of 63 doctors at Broward Health Medical Center who specialize in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dr. Alexis is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FACOG). She is an Associate Professor and the chair of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at NSU-KPCOM.
Kayvan Amini, DO, FACC has been a leader involved in the private sector, research, hospital, and academic arenas of healthcare extensively. His passion for making a difference in Healthcare has led to numerous achievements and recognitions. Dr. Amini is the President and CEO of South Florida Cardiology Consultants. He has also served as managing partner and founder of Elite Cardiology LLC multi-practice organization. He is the current President of Broward County Osteopathic Medical Association, Board of Trustees Member of Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, while serving on the Board of Directors of Broward Medical Association. He has served as a Delegate of the American Osteopathic Association at the House of Delegates voting and helping shape the future of healthcare and its policies. Dr. Amini was recently appointed by Florida’s Deputy Secretary of Medicaid and Agency for Health Care Administration to the State of Florida Drug Utilization Board and serves as the Vice Chair. Dr. Kayvan Amini has trained at prestigious institutions including Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the University of Southern California, and Mount Sinai Medical Center while possessing board certifications in Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Amini has also served as teaching faculty at Nova Southeastern KP College of Osteopathic Medicine as he continues to educate and lecture in the medical arena at the local and state level including FOMA. Along with many other accolades, Dr. Amini has been involved in medical research and served as Clinical Trial Manager for the significant national clinical research study TACT by the National Institutes of Health. He has received prestigious appointments including Fellow of American College of Cardiology, Memorial Health System Executive Committee while serving on multiple other patient safety and peer review committees. He has advanced training, experience, and or licensure in non-invasive cardiac diagnostic testing including echocardiography, vascular medicine, cardiac nuclear medicine, critical care, preventative medicine, and heart failure. His passion for making a difference in healthcare has led to numerous achievements and recognitions including Top Doctor, Best Cardiologist in Pembroke Pines, patient awards, MHS awards, and third-party consumer recognition awards. He actively lectures at state and local medical conferences while educating the public on healthcare and medicine as the medical expert, on the weekly I-Heart Radio broadcast, “Mission Possible," along with "Life Changers."
Robert Ball, DO, MS, AOBA, is a Fellowship Trained Interventional Pain Management Physician with special clinical interests in Neuromodulation including Spinal Cord stimulation and Dorsal Root Ganglion stimulation as well as minimally invasive spinal decompression techniques for patients suffering from low back and leg pain as a result of spinal stenosis. Special Interests include the emerging treatment of vertebrogenic back pain due to lumbar disc degeneneration. He is a native of North Carolina and received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology with minors in Chemistry, Spanish, and Sustainable Development from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. During his undergraduate years, Dr. Ball was able to gain international experience volunteering in rural areas of Latin America. He then earned a Master of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. Having fell in love with the Florida weather and outdoor lifestyle, Dr. Ball remained in Florida and earned his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. During his medical school years, Dr. Ball was selected to be an instructor in the anatomy department assisting in the training of physician assistant students. He then went on to complete a Traditional Rotating internship at NSUCOM/Tenet Health System – Palmetto General Hospital in Hialeah-Miami, Florida. Embarking upon a specialty residency in Anesthesiology, Dr. Ball attended the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University, in Syracuse, New York, where he served with distinction as evidenced by his selection by the faculty to be the Chief Resident of his residency class. He was also voted Resident of the Year by the Anesthesiology Faculty and awarded the Senior Presentation Award. During his residency, Dr. Ball completed Obstetric and Gynecologic Anesthesiology training in the Department of Anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts. After completion of residency in 2009, Dr. Ball was awarded a highly competitive Pain Management Fellowship position at the State University of New York, Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, New York. Currently, Dr. Ball continues his passion for innovation, compassionate care, as well as education. He serves as a consultant and physician instructor for leading companies involved in the field of Neuromodulation - teaching other physicians the latest in surgical techniques and patient care. He has presented at multiple national meetings and taught physicians from all over the country. Dr. Ball is a participating member of multiple professional organizations dedicated to the advancement of the field of Interventional Pain Management including the American Interventional Headache Society, American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, American Society of Anesthesiologists, North American Neuromodulation Society, and the Spine Intervention Society. Dr. Ball is a diplomate of the American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Ball is a Medidata Certified Professional and a Principal Investigator for the PRESS 2 Study with Boston Scientific.
Jay Butterman, DO was born and raised in New York. He graduated from SUNY Binghamtom with a B.S. in Biochemistry. Dr. Butterman attended the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and subsequently did a flexible Internship and a Psychiatry Residency at the Wilford Hall USAF Military Center. After leaving the military, he joined the University of North Texas Health Science Center as Director of the Psychiatric Residency Training Program and Psychiatric Research. Dr. Butterman ultimately left there to go into the Private Practice of Psychiatry. He became engaged with Managed Care and ultimately became the Chief Medical Officer for Behavioral Health for Centene (insuring 26+ million people) with a philosophy of collaborative approaches to help to assure best practices are provided to our Members. He never gave up his private practice and is currently practicing Telemedicine. He lives in North Texas with his wife and youngest daughter (who has had some early successes in her pursuit of an entertainment career), two dogs, and two cats. His youngest son is attending UF in Gainesville and his other 2 children and two grandchildren live in Florida.
Samantha Cotler, DO, MBA received her DO degree from Rowan University School of Medicine in 2015. She completed her Integrated Family Medicine/Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine Residency at AdventHealth Florida Hospital East Orlando (AHEO), where she was chief resident. Currently, Dr. Cotler is Program Director and Medical Director of the AdventHealth East Orlando Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency Program in Orlando, Florida. She is also core faculty for the Family Medicine Residency program at East Orlando. Prior to moving to Florida, she worked as an attending physician at Cotler Family Practice in Wall, NJ. Dr. Cotler is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) and by the American Osteopathic Board of Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (AOBNMM). Dr. Cotler has been involved at both the state and national level as a presenter, peer reviewer, and council and board member with the AOA, ACOFP, AOBFP, AAO, FSACOFP and with AdventHealth Florida Hospital Graduate Medical Education. Currently, she volunteers with Shepherd’s Hope Free Clinic and with RunDisney Races for Walt Disney World both in Orlando, Florida.
Joseph A. Giaimo, DO, MACOI, FCCP, is 1987 graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. After earning his osteopathic medical degree at PCOM, Dr. Giaimo completed a rotating internship at the former Metropolitan Hospital of Philadelphia and his residency at what is now the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. He is an AOA board-certified osteopathic internal and pulmonary medicine physician in private practice in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. In addition to his work in pulmonology, Dr. Giaimo specializes in various forms of sleep medicine, including treatment of insomnia and hypersomnia. He is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists and the American College of Chest Physicians. Dr. Giaimo is Immediate past president of the AOA, where he served the AOA in several capacities, including chair of the Department of Affiliate Affairs, Department of Business Affairs, Department of Education and Department of Research. He is also a past president of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) and the American Lung Association. He also was honored by FOMA as Physician of the Year in 2010. A health policy fellow of the AOA, Dr. Giaimo served on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Practicing Physicians Advisory Council (PPAC), which, before being disbanded, provided input to the federal government on how CMS rules affect practicing physicians.
Anna Hayden, DO is a graduate of The University of Health Sciences in Kansas City, Missouri. She completed her rotating internship at Humana Hospital of The Palm Beaches and a rotating family practice residency at Southeastern University of the Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is boarded certified by The American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians. She is credentialed by AAHIV as an HIV specialist. Dr. Hayden is a Past-President of The Florida Osteopathic Medical Association. She continues to serve as a delegate to the American Osteopathic Association. She served as the first female President of the Broward County Osteopathic Medical Association and remains active on their Board of Governors. Service to the State of Florida include chairing the Medicaid’s (AHCA) Drug Utilization Review Panel as well as twice chair of The Florida Board of Osteopathic Medicine and continues to serve on its probable cause panel. She has served on the Board of Directors of The Federation of State Medical Boards and on its various committees. She also served as President of The American Association of Osteopathic Examiners, which is the group that represents osteopathic fellows serving on state medical licensing boards. Dr. Anna Hayden has been caring for the community of downtown Fort Lauderdale Broward Health-Specialty Care Center, 1111 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Currently she also serves as clinical professor at Nova Southeastern University Dr Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine. Specialty Care Center has been a clinical training center for third- and fourth-year medical students, physician assistant students, pharmacy students, medical assistants, and family medicine residents. She is past chief of The Department of Family Medicine at Broward Health Medical Center and continues to serve on various hospital committees.
Gregory Holt, MD, PhD, graduated from Loyola University Chicago with an MD & PhD completing his graduate studies in Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at Georgetown University and served as the Chief Medical Resident. He did his fellowship in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at the University of Washington and is now an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami and Miami VA Medical Center. Clinically, he specializes in the diagnosis of lung cancer and work up of abnormal chest imaging including evaluation of solitary pulmonary nodules. He performs advanced bronchoscopy including navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, indwelling tunneled pleural catheters and endobronchial valves for the treatment of COPD. Academically, his research interests include use of imaging modalities for the efficient work up of abnormal chest imaging and the development of nanoparticles to selectively transfect lung tumors to improve upon their characteristically immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. He is the Principle Investigator for the Lung Precision Oncology Program for the Miami VA Medical Center.
Marc Kaprow, DO, MPH, FACOI, received his undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida in 1992, and his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University in 2001. During his time at Nova Southeastern, Dr. Kaprow completed pre-doctoral fellowships in both Anatomy and Osteopathic Practices and Principles. Dr. Kaprow completed his Internal Medicine residency at POH Medical Center, an affiliate training site of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, in 2004. During residency, Dr. Kaprow was honored as the Resident of the Year, 2002-2003 and served as Chief Resident during the 2003-2004 training year. Dr. Kaprow is certified in Internal Medicine, Hospice and Palliative Medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine. He completed recertification for Internal Medicine in 2013. Dr. Kaprow practiced as a primary care physician in the Pembroke Pines / Hollywood area for several years. During that time, he served the South Broward Hospital District and Memorial Hospital West on multiple committees, including Utilization Review, Peer Review, Physician Credentialing, Ethics, and the Medical Executive committee. In 2008 he was appointed Medical Director of Memorial Home Health Care, and in 2010 Dr. Kaprow transitioned his practice from patient care to administration as the Associate Medical Director for VITAS Hospice in Broward County. In 2012, Dr. Kaprow joined UnitedHealthcare of Florida as a Medical Director of the Florida Medicaid Long Term Care program, overseeing care for nearly 20,000 frail and elderly Floridians. In 2018 Dr. Kaprow relocated to the Orlando area as a Hospice and Palliative Medicine specialist working for Vitas Healthcare. Dr. Kaprow is a Clinical Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at Nova Southeastern University and an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. He has served as President of the Broward County Osteopathic Medical Association; he has been a FOMA Trustee since 2009, and currently serves as FOMA President. He has served several FOMA Statewide committees as a delegate to the American Osteopathic Association. Dr. Kaprow also has served on the American College of Osteopathic Internists Practice Management and Professional Development Committee. In 2015, he became an AOA National Health Policy Fellow. Dr. Kaprow has authored several professional publications and has lectured nationally on Palliative Medicine topics and Practice Management. Currently, he is a Medical Director with Anthem Healthcare in a work at home position. He is married with three daughters.
Joshua Lenchus, DO, RPh, FACP, SFHM, holds a pharmacy degree from the University of Florida and graduated from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Subsequently, he worked as a hospitalist for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he held the rank of associate professor of medicine, anesthesiology, and radiology. From 2007-16, he served as an associate program director for the internal medicine residency program. Dr. Lenchus joined Broward Health in 2018 as Chief Medical Officer for the health system’s flagship hospital, Broward Health Medical Center. Currently, he is the Chief Medical Officer for Broward Health in Ft. Lauderdale. He is a notable expert in several medical fields. He has presented on opioids and controlled substances locally, regionally, and nationally for several years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he has been a frequent presence in the media, having been interviewed by the major local new stations in the Southeast Florida market, for local and national print, and on radio, including NPR. Outside the hospital, Dr. Lenchus is incredibly involved, serving as a leader in organized medicine at multiple levels, including Past President of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association, past Regent and current Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine. In August 2022, Dr. Lenchus was installed as the 146th President of the Florida Medical Association, which is the first time a DO has led the state medical association.
Robert T. Leonard, Jr., DO, FAACS, FISHRS, is a native of New England who graduated from the University of New Hampshire and earned his DO degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Maine. He completed his rotating Internship at Metropolitan General Hospital in Pinellas Park, Florida, and served his residency at Parkview Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He then completed a preceptorship with the late C.P. Chambers, DO from whom he first learned the art and science of hair restoration surgery. He opened is surgical practice in 1989 in Rhode Island, which rapidly expanded to seven locations in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. He is the Founding Secretary of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) and has served as its President, member of its Board of Governors, along with many other leadership positions over the last 30 years. Dr. Leonard is a Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS) and a Fellow of the ISHRS. He is a Founder Father and a Diplomate of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery (ABHRS). He is a Past President of the Rhode Island Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (RISOPS) and has been a member of Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) since 1986. Dr. Leonard is the current Director of the Hair Health Institute, which provides non-surgical solutions for men and women concerned about hair loss. He has tremendous passion for world travel and greatly enjoys the Florida sunshine! He has been married to a fellow DO medical school classmate for 38 years and has three grown children and a first grandchild who was born just before this meeting!
Jesse J. Lopez Jr., DO, FACOS has been a surgeon for 35 years who specializes in general and bariatric surgery. He is a graduate of the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and completed his surgical training at the Chicago Osteopathic Hospitals and Medical Systems. He is a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, the American Osteopathic Association, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgeons, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, and several state and local medical organizations. Dr. Lopez, has additional expertise in Hormonal and Metabolic Medicine which he utilizes to further assist his patients with weight loss. Steven Ma, DO, was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a first-generation Chinese-Vietnamese American, he was inspired by his uncle, a fellow Osteopathic Family Medicine Physician, to pursue a career in Medicine in order to help serve the community he came from. Steven attended Temple University on a full scholarship, graduating Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Biophysics. Steven went on to attend Medical School at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Steven then moved to Miami, Florida where he completed his Family Medicine Residency and Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at Larkin Community Hospital. After completing his training, Steven worked in Private Practice in Pembroke Pines, Florida, as well as served as the Associate Program Director of Family Medicine at Larkin Community Hospital Palm Springs Campus. His passion for academic medicine and teaching future generations of physicians has led him to take a full-time position at LECOM Bradenton. Steven is currently at LECOM Bradenton, serving as the Assistant Course Director of the Osteopathic Principles and Practices Course, and is the Assistant Dean of Clinical Education. Dr. Ma is a 2013 graduate of PCOM. Dr. Ma is an Assistant Professor of Medicine with a demonstrated history of working in the healthcare industry in Private Practice and in Medical Education as an Associate Program Director of a Medical Residency Program. He is skilled in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Medical Education, and Primary Care.
Sean McCann, DO earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Nova Southeastern University. He completed his residency and internship in family medicine at Florida Hospital East Orlando, where he also served as chief resident. Dr. McCann is a board-certified family medicine physician and a diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. Dr. McCann is the Founding Program Director for the Family medicine Residency Program at Lakeland Regional Health. Dr. McCann is a graduate of the University of Florida and obtained his osteopathic medical degree from Nova Southeastern University. He completed his residency at Advent Health East Orlando where he also served as chief resident. He previously served as clinical faculty at the Family Medicine Residency Program at Advent Health East Orlando, as a physician for the Orlando Solar Bears ECHL Hockey Team as well as the Lakeland Magic NBA G league basketball team. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. McCann serves on the board of trustees for the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association and as the president of FOMA District 3. He volunteers his time with Shepherd’s Hope, a volunteer clinic for under-insured patients, where he also serves as associate medical director.
Naushira Pandya, MD, CMD, FACP, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Geriatrics at Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the project director of the federally-funded Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement grant. In addition to teaching she has an active practice in Geriatrics and Endocrinology. Previously, she worked with the Arizona Long-Term care system, served as an assistant Professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, and as a geriatrician at William Beaumont Hospital in Detroit. Dr Pandya is past president of AMDA, Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, and past chair of its Clinical Practice Committee. She is First VP for the Broward County Area Agency on Aging. She is a reviewer for geriatrics journals and has published in the areas of diabetes, osteoporosis, hypopituitarism, and anemia in the elderly. She has been instrumental in writing clinical practice guidelines on the Management of Diabetes in the Long-term Setting, Osteoporosis, and the Pharmacological Treatment Guideline for Depression in the Long-Term Setting. Dr. Pandya holds the distinction of being a Fulbright Senior Specialist Scholar, a Contributor to the Whitehouse Conference on Aging, and the Whitehouse Conference on Antibiotic Stewardship. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Endocrinology.
Melanie Rodriguez, Outreach Services Director with Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA), has dedicated her career to empowering survivors of domestic violence and working collaboratively with community agencies to create safer outcomes for families. Since 2006, she has worked in shelter and outreach programs to provide survivors with support, resources, safety planning and crisis-intervention throughout south Florida. Melanie developed a series of radio segments that are aired bi-weekly on a faith-based radio station in Spanish to educate the LatinX community on domestic and dating violence and prevention efforts. Melanie published domestic violence articles for electronic newsletters that have been shared with mental health professionals and community members within the state of Florida and outside of the United States. She is identified as an expert on domestic violence cases intersecting with child welfare to develop trainings and participate on regional panel discussions. Currently, she is responsible for contributing to the management of AVDA’s outreach, prevention, and community education programs.
Jennifer Silverman, CPC, CRC, is the practice manager of Lake Howell Family Medicine, a multi-provider office in Maitland, Florida. With more than 20+ years of experience, she is widely known in Central Florida for the breadth and depth of her knowledge in clinical office management. Jennifer is also Vice President of Provider Relations for Florida Accountable Care Services, a regional ACO. Her work for FACS currently includes MRA education and training, GPRO data collection training, and the production of training manuals for the FACS community. In addition, she organizes a quarterly seminar for FACS office managers. Since 2017, Jennifer has used her experience in these dual roles to serve the local healthcare community as a private consultant in efficiency and workflow, MRA, and billing and coding optimization. Jennifer has spoken at healthcare events both large and small, offering engaging presentations that target specific topics in an easily comprehensible and interesting way. She is an AAPC-certified coder and a member of the MicroMD Clinical Advisory Board.
Matthew Tyler is a Violence Prevention Educator with Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA). Originally from Upstate NY, he moved to south Florida in 2004. Matt received his Bachelor degree in Social Sciences from Florida Atlantic University. He spent four years in behavioral health and professional medical training. Matt has nine years’ experience of professional instruction and facilitation. Through the Dept. of Justice’s office of Violence Against Women, Matt has worked specifically around engaging men and boys to prevent violence against woman and children. Matt has worked and trained with national organizations leading the work to end dating and domestic violence. He has spent the last seven years as a project coordinator, facilitating professional and community trainings. He organizes community action events, develops trainings and campaign materials with a focus on public health prevention and youth development.
Jason D. Winn, Esquire, a graduate of the University of Maryland, Winn received his Juris Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad College of Law in Ft. Lauderdale. He is admitted to the Florida Bar and has worked for an assistant public defender in the Fifth Judicial Circuit where he conducted over 15 jury trials, numerous non-jury trials, and hearings including: violations of probation, restitution, and early termination motions for defendants in juvenile, misdemeanor and felony court. Winn was also an adjunct professor at Lake Sumter Community College teaching Business Law and was appointed by Governor Bush to serve a one-year term on the Judicial Nominating Commission for Judicial Compensation Judges. In 2006, he opened his own practice, where he is managing partner and continues to focus on criminal, administrative, governmental, civil, family law, wills and trusts. Currently, he serves as general counsel for the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) and executive director and general counsel for the Florida Society of Hearing Healthcare Professionals (FSHHP). He is a member of the Florida Bar, Tallahassee Bar, Legal Services of North Florida, a lifetime member of the state Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and a member of the Tallahassee Florida Association Criminal Defense Lawyers (FACDL) chapter.
