American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians Announces the election of Gregory James, DO, MPH, FACOFP-distinguished as Chairman of the Board
It is with great excitement that we share the news about our new Chairman of the Board, Dr. Gregory James. It is a privilege for the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP) to bring on board a leader who brings years of experience as a practicing Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Medical Director, Family Medicine Residency Director, and Mentor. Dr. James received his Fellowship and Distinguished Fellowship Awards from the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP). Dr. James has served on the Board of Directors of the AOBFP, since 2004.
Currently, Dr. James is employed as the Senior Medical Director for the North Region of the United States for Optum Home & Community. This position has medical and quality oversight responsibility for United Healthcare Members residing in Skilled Nursing and Assisted Living Facilities in the North Region states.
He was the founding director of the Family Practice Residency Program at St. Petersburg General Hospital and had previously been the Residency Program Director at Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, Florida. He also served Sun Coast Hospital as their Chief of the Medical Staff for two years and on their Medical Executive Committee for over ten years. Dr. James received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine as well his Master’s in Public Health degrees from Nova Southeastern University – College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is a Past President of their alumni association and has received their alumnus of the year award.
Dr. James is the Past President of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) and was selected as Physician of the Year by FOMA, by the Florida Society of the ACOFP, and by the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society (PCOMS).
Dr. James is also a Past President and was named the Educator of the Year of the Florida Society of the ACOFP. He has also been recognized several years in a row by the American Osteopathic Association as a “Mentor of the Year."
Dr. James is AOBFP certified and re-certified in Family Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), and in Geriatrics. He is also Certified as a Medical Director by The American Board of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (ABPLM). We are thrilled to benefit from Dr. James’s leadership in this new role.
