Physician Unionization: Insights from Joshua Lenchus, DO, RPh, FACP

Physicians today work within increasingly complex healthcare environments, where both organizational and professional factors can influence how they practice medicine. Questions surrounding physician autonomy, workplace conditions, and burnout have become important considerations for employed physicians and healthcare organizations alike.

"Both internal and external factors affect a physician’s work environment. Sometimes, these culminate in a loss of autonomy, thereby contributing to burnout. To reclaim this lost power, some employed physicians are joining or forming unions so that, via collective bargaining, they can attempt to negotiate better practice conditions.

Now, the question we need to consider is: Is unionization the solution to, or an exacerbation of, the problem?"

This article explores the relationship between physician autonomy, workplace conditions, burnout, and unionization, examining the factors that have contributed to growing discussions around collective bargaining among employed physicians.
